Love To Eat!

13 Jun

As I started this blog, I subtitled it “Love to Eat!”

I used that tagline because it seems most of us are focused on what not to eat… will eating this/that make me fat, is it unhealthy, is it setting a bag example for my kids.

I thought it might be better to focus on enjoying eating.

This past weekend at mass, our priest began his homily sharing how he was a picky eater as a kid: pb&j and pizza.  That was about it for him.  Scarf it down as fast as he could and back outside to play.  And he realized that as he’s gotten older, he not only likes most foods but he enjoys trying new ones.

His homily led into the celebration of one of the mysteries that the Catholic church celebrates in the weeks after Easter – Corpus Christi, also known as the Body and Blood of Christ.

Father told how Jesus shared the last meal of his life with his disciples and not only did they share the meal, but he led the conversation with phrases we repeat weekly at the Eucharist:

For on the night he was betrayed he himself took bread, and giving you thanks he said the blessing, broke the bread and gave it to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND EAT OF IT: FOR THIS IS MY BODY WHICH WILL BE GIVEN UP FOR YOU.

In a similar way, when supper was ended, he took the chalice, and giving you thanks he said the blessing, and gave the chalice to his disciples, saying:

TAKE THIS, ALL OF YOU, AND DRINK FROM IT: FOR THIS IS THE CHALICE OF MY BLOOD, THE BLOOD OF THE NEW AND ETERNAL COVENANT; WHICH WILL BE POURED OUT FOR YOU AND FOR MANY FOR THE FORGIVENESS OF SINS. DO THIS IN MEMORY OF ME.

Perhaps the reason we eat, the reason to celebrate, is only partly for the nourishment of the body.  Maybe we eat to nourish our soul… through gathering and conversing with others.

Maybe we should love to eat, because Jesus wants us to.  He wants us to sit with our friends, share conversation and nourish ourselves.  Food isn’t to make us feel guilty or worried; it’s good for us.

Here’s what I’ve learned:  Don’t Eat Alone.
